Stora Enso considers closing Kristiinankaupunki plant

Stora Enso is considering closing its production unit in Kristiinankaupunki and transferring corrugated packaging production to its factory in Lahti, Yle reports. Change negotiations affecting about 50 employees will begin immediately.

The company says the plan is intended to improve the efficiency, profitability and long-term competitiveness of its corrugated packaging production.

If the planned changes go ahead, production at the Kristiinankaupunki unit would end between May and September 2027. The negotiations are expected to last at least three weeks.

Challenging market and high costs

According to Stora Enso, the Finnish market for corrugated packaging has been challenging for several years. The Kristiinankaupunki plant also has relatively high fixed costs, while its production equipment would require significant investment.

Sales and customer service would continue to operate from Kristiinankaupunki, and the company’s warehouse there would remain in use. Stora Enso Packaging employs about 320 people in Lahti and Kristiinankaupunki combined.
