Stólpi plans 260 temporary worker apartments in Hafnarfjörður

Stólpi plans to build 130 homes containing 260 apartments in Hafnarfjörður for workers in project-based employment, mbl.is reports. The development will cover about 10 hectares near Krýsuvíkurvegur and Hvaleyrarvegur.

Construction is planned in two phases. The first will include 50 homes with 100 apartments, followed by 80 homes with 160 apartments.

Stólpi is developing the project for its sister company, Styrkás Fasteignir ehf. An agreement has been reached, subject to approval by Hafnarfjörður’s town council.

Orri Björnsson, chairman of Hafnarfjörður’s town council executive committee, said the project was important for people working temporarily in Iceland.

“There are examples of people living in unacceptable conditions in housing that was not built for habitation and which may even pose a danger,” he said. “Stólpi’s development will quickly increase the supply of safe and affordable housing.”

The units will measure 35 square metres and be arranged in pairs as duplexes with steel cladding. Stólpi will oversee construction and rent the homes to companies for use by their employees.

The first apartments are expected to be built next year.
