Flexible work could unlock older people’s skills, say advocates

Society could benefit more from older people’s experience and abilities if the labour market became more flexible, Kringvarp Føroya reported. The issue was discussed on the broadcaster’s morning programme by former teacher Hans Jacob Hermansen and Annemi L. Joensen, chair of the Elder Council in Tórshavn Municipality.

People are living longer, and more are enjoying many active and healthy years after their working lives have ended. Hermansen and Joensen said barriers that make it less attractive for older people to remain in the labour market should be removed, including the reduction of pension payments in certain circumstances.

They also said workplaces should do more to ensure that older employees’ knowledge and experience benefit younger staff.

However, they stressed that a fulfilling retirement is not only about work. Voluntary work, social activities and having something meaningful to do can provide purpose and a sense of continuing to make a contribution.

They also highlighted freedom as an important part of retirement. After a long working life, people can decide how to use their time and choose the activities they want to pursue.
