State pledges matching funds for Vágur sports high school

The Faroese government will fund its share of a new sports high school in Vágur, broadcaster KVF reported on Tuesday. Education Minister Bárður á Lakjuni said funding has been set aside for the project over the coming years.

The Danish Nordea Foundation has pledged 39.8 million kroner to build the school in Suðuroy. The foundation requires the government to provide an equal amount.

“Money was allocated earlier this year for the project design. Some funding is still missing, but it will come next year,” Bárður á Lakjuni said.

The project design must be completed before an authorisation bill is submitted to the Faroese Parliament. Under the law governing folk high schools, the government can finance up to half of such projects.

Funds for the construction have been included in the national budget through 2029, and the minister said he expects Parliament to approve the plan. The Danish Parliament has also allocated five million kroner, while Vágur Municipality has provided the building site.
