Hvalur hf. has ended this year’s whaling season after catching 93 fin whales, mbl.is reports. The company’s vessels will not return to sea because of a poor weather forecast for next week.
The season lasted 94 days. Hvalur chief executive Kristján Loftsson said weather conditions significantly disrupted whaling, with the vessels spending about 25 days sheltering in Hvalfjörður.
Equipment used by the whaling vessels, including guns, harpoons and explosives, was brought ashore in Hvalfjörður on Sunday.
The Hvalur 8 and Hvalur 9 vessels have also arrived in Reykjavík and will remain at Ægisgarður until next summer.
Processing has not yet been completed in Hvalfjörður. Workers are processing material from the last whales landed before cleaning and preparations to close the operation begin.
