Car wreck catches fire near Patterson Airfield on Njarðvík heath in Iceland

A car wreck caught fire near the old munitions storage at Patterson Airfield on Njarðvík heath. Emergency services responded effectively to extinguish the blaze, which had been burning for some time. Thick black smoke rose from the burning vehicle; however, authorities indicated that there was no immediate danger to the public.

The report of the fire came in around eleven o’clock this evening, with the vehicle having been in that location for a considerable duration. Patterson Airfield was established by the United States military during World War II and was officially opened in 1942. It served as one of two airfields constructed by the U.S., the other originally named Meeks Airfield, which later became Keflavik International Airport.

Patterson Airfield was designated exclusively for fighter aircraft and has remained unused since the end of the war.
