Council narrowly approves eldercare centre move in Kollafjørður

A narrow majority of Tórshavn City Council has approved moving a planned eldercare centre in Kollafjørður, KVF reports. The decision was made late Thursday night without the support of Mayor Elsa Berg.

The proposal was submitted by Bergur Robert Dam Jensen, a City Council member for the Social Democratic Party, which is part of the governing majority. He wants the centre moved from Todnes to Norðurøki.

The municipality has discussed building an eldercare centre in Kollafjørður for several years. Construction has not yet begun, and Jensen, who is from Kollafjørður, said he had lost patience. He also said the local committee for Kollafjørður supported the relocation.

However, the council majority, of which Jensen is also a member, did not support the proposal. It passed after Jensen, Heðin Mortensen and members of the minority voted in favour.

The debate showed that relations within the council coalition were strained. Mayor Elsa Berg also spoke in strong terms during the meeting.
