Tórshavn council fails to resolve mountain bike trail plans

Uncertainty remains over a planned mountain bike trail outside Tórshavn after the city council failed to reach a decision, Kringvarp Føroya reported.

Heidi Lava Elgeirsdóttir proposed sending the matter back to the administration before returning it to the relevant committee and the city council. The proposal received six votes in favour and six against and therefore failed.

Bergur Robert Dam Jensen, a member of the council majority and the municipal cultural affairs committee, voted against the proposal. Heðin Mortensen, who is also part of the majority, abstained.

Tróndur Sigurðsson asked for the minutes to record that he intends to appeal the council’s decision to put the matter to a vote after he had withdrawn his request for a formal position. He had asked for the issue to be discussed and decided by the council at Thursday’s meeting.

In a letter to the editor on 27 August, Mayor Elsa Berg said the cultural affairs committee would propose that Tórshavn Municipality work with mountain bikers and the cycling and triathlon federation to review plans for a mountain bike trail at Vesturvarði and examine other options.

Berg said there was no longer a majority on the council in favour of the trail at Vesturvarði. The matter was not discussed at the cultural affairs committee’s meeting, however, and was postponed.
