Justice ministry cuts six positions under government austerity drive

Iceland’s Ministry of Justice is eliminating six positions as part of the government’s austerity measures, mbl.is reports. Permanent Secretary Páll Winkel said two employees had been dismissed, two more had been told their contracts would not be renewed, and two recently vacated positions would remain unfilled.

Some of the duties handled by the six employees will be transferred to other ministry staff, while others will move to the Icelandic State Financial Management Authority, Winkel said.

He said no further layoffs were currently planned, but added that the ministry would continue to exercise restraint, review all spending categories and assess whether costs could be reduced.
