Landspítali takes over 20-space unit to shorten emergency waits

Landspítali hospital has formally taken over a new emergency assessment unit designed to ease pressure on its emergency department, shorten waiting times and improve patient flow, mbl.is reports.

The unit has 20 new spaces for patients. The building was constructed by Nýr Landspítali ohf.

Health Minister Alma D. Möller handed the keys to Runólfur Pálsson, Landspítali’s chief executive, on Thursday.

“I am handing over the new emergency assessment unit with thanks to those who have worked in the emergency department and kept services running under difficult conditions,” Möller said. “This new unit will improve patient safety and shorten the time from when a sick patient arrives at the emergency department until they receive a diagnosis and treatment.”

Pálsson described the handover as an important milestone for the hospital and for people who need emergency care.

“This is a very significant milestone for Landspítali and for people who need the hospital’s emergency services,” he said. “Not only are we gaining 20 new spaces for patients, which will ease pressure on the emergency department, but this new unit is also an important link in the reorganisation of emergency services for the future.”
