Tourism operator urges growth at East Iceland conference

A tourism operator and SAF board member handed a cake to East Iceland municipal representatives in Neskaupstaður on Thursday, using the gesture to highlight the industry’s importance to Iceland’s economy, mbl.is reports.

Sævar Guðjónsson, who runs a tourism business at Mjóeyri in Eskifjörður, presented the cake in fine weather on the town’s pier. The municipal officials had gathered in Norðfjörður for the 60th anniversary conference of the Association of Municipalities in East Iceland.

Sævar said tourism could help make the economic “cake” bigger if it was allowed to grow rather than being restricted by charges. That, he said, would give the community a larger slice.
