KVF reports that the private limited company Landleiðin will take over waste collection for Tórshavn Municipality on October 1 using electric garbage trucks.

The first electric trucks have arrived in the Faroe Islands, with the remaining vehicles expected later this month. The company will operate seven electric trucks in total.

“This is one of the first steps in moving the municipality’s heavy transport to renewable energy,” Mayor Elsa Berg said when she signed the waste collection agreement with Landleiðin chief executive Jón Thomasen.

The agreement, signed nearly a year ago, requires the garbage trucks to be electric. Landleiðin’s contract is worth 13.6 million kroner per year and runs for 12 years.
