Aircraft technicians listed in salary data averaged ISK 1.9 million

The 16 aircraft technicians named in Frjáls verslun’s salary publication earned an average of more than ISK 1.9 million a month last year, mbl.is reports. The figure is well above the base wage cited by Óskar Einarsson, chairman of the Icelandic Aircraft Technicians Association, in coverage of the technicians’ wage dispute with Icelandair.
Óskar told Morgunblaðið that a journeyman aircraft technician’s wage was ISK 601,030 a month. Total earnings can include night work, overtime premiums and other additions.
He rejected claims that aircraft technicians generally earn ISK 1.4 million a month, saying there were examples of that level but that it included night work and various premiums, such as shift allowances or other entitlements accumulated over time.
The highest-paid technician on the list earned ISK 3.455 million a month, while the second-highest earned ISK 2.138 million. Óskar was close behind, with total monthly earnings of ISK 2.124 million last year.
Thirteen of the 16 technicians earned between ISK 1.121 million and ISK 3.455 million a month. The three lowest earners received between ISK 602,000 and ISK 845,000.
According to Óskar, 287 aircraft technicians work for Icelandair. The company’s technicians have announced a strike starting on September 23.
The salary publication does not state whether the technicians listed also receive income from other work. Morgunblaðið sources say this is not uncommon among pilots working for Icelandair.
