Visitors to the Laufey í Landeyjum roadside shop were surprised by inflated prices displayed on products on Monday, mbl.is reported. A Rís chocolate bar was marked at more than 9,000 kronur, Stjörnu Popp popcorn at about 4,400 kronur and a can of Kristall at more than 2,800 kronur.
Maryland biscuits, meanwhile, appeared to be free according to the price display.
The prices were caused by a software error and did not reflect what customers were charged at the checkout. Ottó Eðvarð Guðjónsson, a shareholder in the shop, said the Rís chocolate actually costs about 168 kronur.
“It does not cost 9,000 kronur,” Ottó said with a laugh.
He said the shop’s computer systems had caused problems intermittently in recent weeks. Different software systems need to communicate with one another, and the integration has not worked properly.
The error was highlighted by users of the Facebook group Vertu á verði, which monitors prices. Ottó said the issue was being fixed and apologised for the inconvenience.
Laufey í Landeyjum is the first shop planned under the brand, which intends to open 42 roadside shops across Iceland.
