Driver charged over fatal motorcycle crash

The South Iceland police commissioner has indicted a driver over a June crash in which a motorcyclist died, mbl.is reported.

The crash occurred on June 20 on the South Iceland road at the junction with Kerlingardalsvegur, a road in the Mýrdalshreppur municipality. According to the indictment, issued on September 11, the driver was travelling east and turned left towards Kerlingardalsvegur without sufficient care or caution.

The indictment alleges that the driver was unable to control the car safely because of sleep deprivation and turned into the path of the motorcycle, which was approaching from the opposite direction. The motorcycle struck the front of the car, throwing the rider from it. The rider died at the scene almost immediately from the injuries sustained.

The case also includes civil claims against the driver seeking a total of 47 million in compensation for non-pecuniary damage.
