Landsvirkjun to replace four Búrfell power station stators

Landsvirkjun has signed a contract with Austrian company Andritz Hydro GmbH to replace four stators at Búrfell power station, mbl.is reports.

Andritz Hydro will design, manufacture and deliver the equipment, as well as oversee its installation. The work is scheduled for completion in the first half of 2030.

The total cost of replacing the four stators is estimated at about 2.3 billion Icelandic krónur, with the stators themselves accounting for the largest share of the amount.

Búrfell power station began operating in 1969, and its stators were first replaced towards the end of the 20th century. A stator is the stationary part of a machine where electricity is generated. It surrounds the generator, whose rotation produces an electric current in the stator’s coils.

Under the contract, four stators will be replaced over the next four years. Landsvirkjun and Andritz Hydro have worked together previously, with the Austrian company supplying equipment for Sultartangi power station, Búrfell II and Fljótsdalur power station.
