Moose damages fence during North Zealand wanderings

A moose damaged a fence after running onto a farm in Hundested, North Zealand, DR reports. The animal was also seen by a birdwatcher on a beach near Kikhavn.

The farmer reported the incident to North Zealand Police, according to the police daily report. The report was registered, but police said it was not their responsibility to regulate the moose’s freedom of movement.

Birdwatcher Hjalte Winther Abrahamsen encountered the animal during a birdwatching trip. He said all the birds suddenly flew away before a large animal came running towards him.

“I thought it was a loose horse, but then I realised it was something a little bigger,” he said.

Abrahamsen estimated that he was 10 to 15 metres from the moose at one point. He described seeing it so close as an almost unreal experience and took photographs of the animal.

Advice from the Nature Agency

Søren Oldenburg, a forest manager and head of the North Zealand division of the Danish Nature Agency, said people should not be nervous if they encounter the moose in nature.

“Moose are not naturally inclined to approach people, but like all large animals, they should be treated with respect,” he said.

The agency believes the animal is the same moose that has been spotted several times since May.

Oldenburg advised people to watch it from a distance and not approach it for a photograph or selfie. They should allow the moose to retreat if it wants to, and keep any dogs on a lead to avoid dangerous situations.
