Delayed student housing sends 40 students to Vejle hotel

Forty international students in Vejle are staying in a hotel because their student accommodation was not completed on time, DR reports.

The students had been promised housing at Nova Living, which students staying at the hotel have renamed Nowhere Living. Martin Paulik travelled from Slovakia to begin one of the newly established University of Southern Denmark programmes in Vejle.

“This was not what I expected to happen when I moved to another country. I am looking forward to having my own place with more space and privacy,” Paulik said.

The students have been staying at the Cabinn hotel in Vejle for almost two weeks. Hotel manager Dorte Kobel said their presence had not disrupted other guests and had brought more life to the hotel.

“The young people are settling into their daily routine. They now come down for breakfast in groups, wearing flip-flops and pyjama bottoms,” Kobel said.

In the afternoons, the students use the lounge area, where queues form at temporarily installed microwaves.

AAB Vejle, the housing association behind the development, had been due to complete the homes on September 1. Director Michael Petterson said delays in building materials had pushed back the schedule while the contractor worked to finish the project.

The new completion deadline is October 17.
