Sabine’s outdoor app reaches 2,000 users

When Sabine Prenslev Christensen moved from Zealand to Jutland, she struggled to find people to enjoy the outdoors with. She responded by creating the Trailmates app, which has now passed 2,000 users, DR reports.

Christensen moved to Silkeborg because she liked the surrounding nature, but initially had no one to experience it with.

“There are so many beautiful places that local people would really like to show others. But when I searched for those people on various social media platforms, I quickly found myself disappearing into the background because it all felt superficial,” she said.

Trailmates allows users to organise running, cycling, climbing and other outdoor activities that others can sign up for. Users can also chat, match with one another and join events created in the app.

When creating a profile, users choose whether they are looking for an adventure companion or a romantic partner. Christensen said the distinction was introduced partly to make the app feel safer for people who were not seeking a romantic relationship.

“You can have a wonderful family and still lack people to sleep in a shelter with. That is why we created the option to show that you are not interested in a romantic relationship,” she said.

The app was launched in March. Christensen said the most meaningful feedback had come from people who had longed for someone to share experiences with and found that person through Trailmates.

A couple has already formed through the app, she said, calling it “fantastic”.
