MP links poor PISA reading scores to neglect of humanities

Astrið Breckmann, a member of parliament and teacher, has linked poor reading results in the PISA assessment to the long-term downgrading of the humanities, Kringvarp Føroya reported.

Breckmann, who sits on the parliament’s culture committee, also criticised plans by her party colleague and minister Bárður á Lakjuni to remove the requirement to study German.

She made the comments during KVF’s Breddin programme, where members of the culture committee discussed the PISA results.

Atli F. Johansen and Liljan Weihe, who also sit on the committee, advised against making quick and unsubstantiated decisions of the kind Denmark has taken since the PISA results were published.

However, they acknowledged that limiting the use of social media would be appropriate.
