Suðurnes school marks 50th anniversary with concerts

Fjölbrautaskóli Suðurnesja, an upper-secondary school in Reykjanesbær, is celebrating its 50th anniversary, mbl.is reports. Current and former students are invited to a celebration today, Friday, September 11.

Leading musicians who attended the school, and in some cases began their careers there, will perform at Hljómahöll. The three-hour concert will highlight the school’s distinctive musical history.

Performers include Kolrassa krókríðandi, Valdimar Guðmundsson, Sigurður Guðmundsson and rising star Guðjón Þorgils Kristjánsson, the first student to win the Icelandic upper-secondary schools singing competition.

The concert begins at 6pm and ends at 9pm. Admission is free and there is no age limit.

On Saturday, the school will host an open house from noon to 2pm, followed by a ceremonial event featuring musical performances and speeches by a minister, the school principal and others.

A commemorative magazine will also be published, reviewing the school’s history through photographs and text and offering an insight into life and work at Fjölbrautaskóli Suðurnesja over the past 50 years.
