Some retailers market illegal electric bikes as ordinary e-bikes

Several retailers are misleading customers by selling electric bicycles that can travel so fast they cannot legally be used on public roads, according to DR.

Consumer Council Tænk and the Council for Safe Traffic have reviewed the online marketing of electric bicycles from four retailers and believe the companies are advertising them in breach of the law.

The organisations have complained about the retailers to the Consumer Ombudsman.

“We have complained about the companies because they describe the vehicles as electric bicycles, even though they do not meet the rules,” said Winni Grosbøl, director of Consumer Council Tænk.

One of the bicycles can travel at 47 kilometres per hour, according to a test carried out by Vestegnens Police, said Jacob Bøving Arendt, director of the Council for Safe Traffic.
