Minister reviews Steno Centre plans after bids exceed funding

KVF reports that the Faroe Islands’ minister for health and energy will now decide how to proceed with the planned Steno Centre, a diabetes centre to be built above the C building at the National Hospital.

Landsverk received two bids for the construction project last year, but both were too expensive. Novo Nordisk has pledged 62 million Danish kroner to the project, but that amount is not enough.

The plan has not been abandoned and will instead be reviewed, said Health and Energy Minister Eyðdis Hartmann Niclasen.

“There is a great need for a Steno Centre in the Faroe Islands. Diabetes care requires a great deal, and when we are offered such a diabetes centre, we should accept it and house it in the Faroe Islands,” she said.

When the project was put out to tender, the centre was expected to be completed next year. Construction has not yet started.
