Police add driving intoxication suspicion in fatal Pori crash

Police suspect the driver involved in a fatal pedestrian crossing collision in Pori in March of driving while intoxicated, Yle reports. The driver is also suspected of aggravated causing of death and other offences.

Southwestern Finland Police said blood tests showed that the level of permitted medicinal substances exceeded the therapeutic range. Breathalyser and rapid drug tests carried out on the day of the crash were negative.

The driver’s van hit an elderly man crossing at a pedestrian crossing at the intersection of Antinkatu and Liisankatu on March 23. The pedestrian later died.

Police have completed their preliminary investigation. The approximately 40 year old driver was travelling along Antinkatu towards the market square at about 40 kilometres per hour in a 30 kilometre per hour zone. He was also subject to a driving ban at the time of the collision.

Police are investigating the case as aggravated causing of death, aggravated endangerment of road safety, driving while intoxicated and driving a vehicle without the right to do so.
