Road paving on Dynjandisheiði delayed until next summer

Completion of a new road over Dynjandisheiði, a mountain pass, is now expected next summer rather than this autumn, mbl.is reports. The road may nevertheless open fully this autumn, even though some sections will not receive a paved surface this year, according to the Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration.

Bæjarins besta, a Westfjords news outlet, first reported the delay. The unfinished section is about four kilometres long and is scheduled to be paved next summer.

“The contractor is considerably behind schedule, and despite promising assurances, it will not be possible to pave around four kilometres this year. That work will therefore be carried out next summer,” the administration said in a response to bb.is this week.

The project is the third and final stage of building a new road across Dynjandisheiði. It forms part of transport improvements linking settlement centres in the southern and northern Westfjords.

The stage includes about 7.2 kilometres of road on a new alignment, as well as improvements to a one-kilometre section of Dynjandavegur leading to the Dynjandi waterfall.
