Nearly half of Faroese students struggle to read and understand texts, according to broadcaster KVF, citing teachers’ responses to the latest PISA results.
“Faroese students are not particularly strong readers. They may be able to read the text, but they have difficulty understanding its content,” said Oddfríður Marni Rasmussen, a teacher at Skúlin á Fløtum in Tórshavn.
The 2025 PISA results were presented on Tuesday. Faroese students scored 428 points in reading, 19 points fewer than in 2022 and 42 points fewer than in 2015.
Jastrid á Dalbø, a teacher at Fuglafjørður School, also said she had seen the problem. She said many children read too little and that more needed to be done to encourage them to read.
She added that English has a significant influence on the situation.
