Minister defends kilometre charge as fairer road funding

Education and Children’s Affairs Minister Inga Sæland defended the planned kilometre charge at a government press conference, saying it would make people who drive the most contribute more to road costs, mbl.is reported.

Sæland said the choice was partly between introducing the kilometre charge and continuing with the fuel tax. She asked whether people would prefer to pay more than 90 krónur extra for each litre of petrol rather than see the kilometre charge rise by 1.10 krónur.

According to Sæland, the increase would amount to about 16,000 krónur a year for a family driving 15,000 kilometres. She said the government wanted those who use the roads most and cause the greatest wear to contribute more to maintaining them.
