Foreign media cover Iceland minister’s meeting with US ambassador

Foreign media have reported on a meeting between Icelandic Foreign Minister Þorgerður Katrín Gunnarsdóttir and Billy Long, the US ambassador to Iceland, mbl.is reports.

Gunnarsdóttir summoned Long after US President Donald Trump posted an image on the social media platform Truth Social showing a map in which US flag colours covered North American countries, Iceland and Greenland.

Gunnarsdóttir and Prime Minister Kristrún Frostadóttir have condemned the post. Gunnarsdóttir conveyed her position to the ambassador and said the US president’s post was completely unacceptable.

US news outlet NBC reported on the meeting, saying inquiries had been sent to US embassies in Reykjavík and Copenhagen and to the US consulate in Nuuk, Greenland. No responses had been received.

NBC noted that Trump posted the map after the European Union announced a 200 million euro investment in Greenland. The US president has openly expressed ideas about the United States acquiring Greenland and incorporating it into the country, causing significant tension between the EU and the US.

British outlet The Independent highlighted that Denmark, which Greenland belongs to, is an EU member and a US ally in NATO. French newspaper Le Monde wrote that Trump’s repeated threats to take control of Greenland, located less than 300 kilometres from Iceland, along with his tariff dispute with Canada, had frightened Icelanders.

USA Today also covered the story, while Nordic outlets including Denmark’s DR and Norway’s NRK reported on Trump’s post and the reactions of Icelandic politicians.
