Scholars examine Iceland’s bottom-ranked PISA results

Researchers from the University of Iceland and the University of Akureyri are presenting an analysis of Iceland’s PISA results, mbl.is reported. Iceland ranks either last or second-to-last among 27 European countries in the OECD comparison.

The University of Iceland’s Institute of Education Studies has published a report analysing the results. Professor Anna Kristín Sigurðardóttir edited the report, which was prepared by a group of researchers.

The presentation covers Icelandic students’ performance compared with other countries, science performance, students of foreign origin, social and emotional factors, learning with digital technology, school management and equality in education, as well as proposals for responses.

The programme includes presentations by researchers from the University of Iceland and the University of Akureyri. A panel discussion on the state of the education system and how the results should be used will feature Freyja Hreinsdóttir, dean of the University of Iceland’s School of Education; Linda Heiðarsdóttir, an office director at the Ministry of Education and Children; Magnús Þór Jónsson, chairman of the Icelandic Teachers’ Association; and Þórdís Jóna Sigurðardóttir, director general of the Directorate of Education and School Services.
