Árneshreppur records Iceland’s fastest population growth

Árneshreppur, a municipality in Iceland, recorded the country’s fastest proportional population growth between 1 December 2025 and 1 September 2026, according to mbl.is. Its population increased by 9.8%, or six residents.
Grýtubakkahreppur had the second-largest proportional increase, at 5.5%.
Reykjavík’s population grew by 316 residents during the period, while Hafnarfjörður added 615. Akureyri gained 157 residents, and the population of Árborg increased by 301. Reykjanesbær lost 360 residents.
According to Statistics Iceland, the population fell in 17 of Iceland’s 61 municipalities and increased or remained unchanged in 44.
