Police suspect parents of attempting to kill baby in Espoo

Yle reports that police have completed a preliminary investigation in which both parents are suspected of attempting to kill their baby in Espoo.

Western Uusimaa Police began investigating violence against the baby last autumn. According to police, the injuries were not caused by a single incident but occurred on several occasions.

“Based on the understanding formed during the preliminary investigation, this was not an isolated act. The baby’s injuries were caused on multiple occasions,” Detective Chief Inspector Elina Hult said in a statement.

The baby suffered serious injuries and spent several weeks in hospital, police said.

Both parents remain suspects. They were detained at the beginning of the investigation last autumn but have since been released.

Police were initially informed of the case by other authorities. The investigation has now been sent to a prosecutor for consideration of charges.
