Finland to compensate damage caused by foreign drones

Finland will be able to compensate individuals and companies for reasonable damage caused by drones operated by foreign states, the Ministry of Finance said, according to Yle.

The Economic Policy Ministerial Committee decided that compensation may be granted on a case by case basis for personal injuries and property damage caused by a foreign state drone intended for military use, or by handling such a drone.

There is currently no legislation allowing the state to compensate property damage caused by drones. Municipal and Regional Minister Anna-Kaisa Ikonen said the state should provide compensation when necessary, even though no law currently requires it.

The committee also decided to begin drafting legislation on compensation for drone damage. The law would be temporary and could be extended quickly if necessary.
