Swedish pupils record worst-ever Pisa results

Swedish 15-year-olds have recorded their worst-ever results in mathematics, reading comprehension and science, according to the latest Pisa assessment, SVT reported.

The sharpest decline was in reading comprehension, where ninth-grade pupils lost 21 points. The Swedish National Agency for Education says a 20-point drop corresponds roughly to one full year of learning.

Results in mathematics and reading comprehension deteriorated most. Science performance remained at the same low level as in the previous assessment in 2022.

Other Nordic countries also recorded historically low levels, according to the agency’s summary of the results.

Pisa is an international study that measures the skills of 15-year-old pupils in mathematics, reading comprehension and science. The OECD conducts the assessment every three years.

The 2022 assessment showed that Swedish pupils’ results in mathematics and reading comprehension had declined compared with 2018.
