Preliminary data shows 46 people drowned this summer

Yle reported that 46 people drowned during the summer, according to preliminary figures from the Finnish Swimming Teaching and Lifesaving Federation. The figures were compiled from media reports and publicly available official sources.

There were 45 drownings in June, July and August last year, one fewer than this year. Although the number of drownings has declined over the longer term, figures for the summer months have remained relatively stable over the past decade.

Fourteen people drowned in August. Four of the deaths involved watercraft, two occurred while swimming and the circumstances were unclear in eight cases.
