Police suspect stone impact in motorway incident

Police now believe a car damaged on the Køge Bugt Motorway may have been hit by road debris rather than a stone thrown from a footbridge, DR reports. The 42-year-old driver from Greve was not injured but was shocked by the incident.

The car was struck on Sunday afternoon as it passed beneath a footbridge. The driver told police that the stone was about the size of a tennis ball.

Mid- and West Zealand Police said the extent of the damage indicated that the incident may have involved a stone impact.

“Our current assumption is that this was a stone impact,” Deputy Police Inspector Søren Danielsen told DR.

Police are continuing to seek witnesses who may have seen someone on the footbridge before or after the incident, which the driver said took place at about 2.15pm. Investigators want witnesses either to confirm or disprove the theory.

Danielsen said stones thrown at cars were often larger and could penetrate the windscreen or shatter it completely. That did not appear to have happened in this case, he said.

Two cars were struck by stones on the Amager Motorway near the Avedøre Holme exit on August 30 and September 2, Copenhagen West Police previously reported. Mid- and West Zealand Police said there was no reason to believe the motorway incident was connected to those cases.
