Picasso exhibition drives record ticket sales at Aalborg museum

A Picasso exhibition has driven record ticket sales and visitor numbers at the Kunsten art museum in Aalborg, DR reports.

Kunsten opened Late Picasso in May, and the exhibition recorded the museum’s highest weekly ticket sales during its first week.

“We have already had considerably more visitors between August and September than we had throughout the whole of last year,” said museum director Lasse Anderson.

Anderson said the museum’s visitor numbers are usually affected by good weather, but the exceptionally warm summer had not stopped Kunsten from recording a strong result.

The museum expects nearly 75,000 people to have seen the exhibition by the time it closes.

Late Picasso features more than 60 works from the 1960s and 1970s. It is described as the most comprehensive Nordic exhibition of Picasso’s late works in 40 years.

The exhibition was created through a collaboration between PoMo in Trondheim, Moderna Museet in Stockholm, Kunsten and the Fundación Almine y Bernard Ruiz-Picasso, based in Brussels and Madrid.

Bernard Ruiz-Picasso, Pablo Picasso’s grandson, is a businessman and art collector who controls one of the largest private collections of Picasso’s works.

Anderson said the exhibition had also opened the possibility of future collaborations with Bernard Ruiz-Picasso. The final day to see Late Picasso at Kunsten is Sunday.
