Government backs 21 million euros for Rauma carbon capture plant

Yle reports that the government supports 21 million euros in investment aid for Metsä Fibre’s planned plant to capture biogenic, or wood-based, carbon dioxide in Rauma. Labour Minister Matias Marttinen announced the decision in a Facebook post.

The project is expected to cost about 70 million euros in total. Metsä Fibre had not previously disclosed the plant’s overall cost estimate.

Biogenic carbon dioxide can be used, among other things, to produce renewable e fuels.

According to Marttinen, construction of the plant alongside Metsä Fibre’s pulp mill would create more than 160 person years of employment in Rauma. The investment would also create about 10 direct and indirect jobs, including in logistics and plant operations.

Metsä Fibre said in the spring that the planned plant would have the capacity to capture about 100,000 tonnes of wood based carbon dioxide a year.
