Police examine link between pig farm and mink farm break-ins

Police are investigating whether a break-in at Stjörnugrís’s pig farm at Brimnes on Kjalarnes overnight is connected to an unsolved break-in at the Dalsbúi mink farm in Mosfellsdal in July, mbl.is reports. More than one person has been arrested in connection with the mink farm case, but it remains unresolved.

Hildur Rún Björnsdóttir, a police officer with the Capital Region Police, told mbl.is that no further information could be provided at this stage.

Stjörnugrís said the signs of the latest break-in were similar to those found after an earlier incident in May. Fixtures had been torn out, pens opened and doors left open.

The company said the consequences for the animals were serious. Five piglets died, while one sow broke its leg and had to be euthanised. Numerous other animals were injured and suffered wounds. Further consequences may emerge in the coming days and weeks, including stress, reduced milk production among sows and possible miscarriages.

Geir Gunnar Geirsson, Stjörnugrís’s chief executive, said the series of break-ins showed that the actions were not about concern for animals or their welfare, but rather about causing them fear, injuries and death.
