Midflokkur seeks abortion law changes with counselling and waiting period

The Midflokkur party wants to amend the abortion law to include mandatory counselling, a waiting period and data collection, Kringvarp Føroya reported. Party leader Steffan Klein Poulsen said the proposal was an attempt to save what could be saved.

The new law, adopted in December last year, allows women to obtain abortions freely. Poulsen said he did not support the law but acknowledged that reversing it would probably not be possible.

“Overall, I can say that we want to bring some elements of life into the law,” Poulsen said.

The party’s proposal is not yet complete, but three main points have been identified: mandatory counselling for women seeking an abortion, a waiting period before the procedure, and the collection of information from women seeking abortions for statistical purposes.
