Mink sneaks into Hafnarfjörður home and hides under kitchen

A mink entered a home in Hafnarfjörður on Tuesday and hid beneath the kitchen cabinets, mbl.is reports. The animal was eventually scared out, but its owners said they had to throw away several items because of the smell.

“My husband called me yesterday afternoon and said I had a guest in the kitchen. A mink had entered our house,” said Birna Kristjánsdóttir, a resident of Stuðlaberg in Hafnarfjörður.

Birna was away when the mink slipped inside. Her husband had been working in the garden with the doors open. While gardening, he spoke with a neighbour who showed him a video of a mink seen nearby.

“He immediately ran to close the doors and then heard the animal inside,” Birna said. The mink appeared to be eating cat food in the kitchen.

The animal then got beneath the kitchen cabinets and hid there. Birna rushed home after her husband called her.

They eventually managed to frighten the mink out, but it had crawled into a drawer beneath the oven, where Birna kept several electrical appliances and baking tins. She said she had to throw many items away because the smell left by the unwanted visitor was unbearable and spread to the upper floors.

“But we managed to get it out. We could never have killed it,” she said.
