Fire forces Center Hotels Skjaldbreið guests to relocate

All guests at Center Hotels Skjaldbreið were moved to other hotels operated by the chain after a fire broke out at the building at Laugavegur 16 in Reykjavík, mbl.is reported.

Firefighting operations ended at 4am. The fire started in the basement and took time to extinguish, allowing smoke to spread throughout the building and causing considerable damage, according to Kristófer Oliversson, chief executive of Center Hotels.

Four staff members from nearby hotels arrived during the night and helped evacuate all the guests. Oliversson praised the work of the fire service and police, describing their response as professional.

The hotel is now assessing the damage and determining whether it can reopen within days or whether repairs will take weeks.
