Brøndby Strand plans 7,000 apartments in sweeping redevelopment

Brøndby Strand is set for a major redevelopment aimed at bringing residents together, DR reports. The municipality expects the project to create 7,000 new apartments and transform Brøndby Strand Centrum into a more open shopping and café area.

Brøndby Mayor Maja Højgaard says the district is currently too divided. Residents in public housing in Brøndby Strand Parkerne have an average annual income half that of people living closer to the beach, she says.

“There is no natural meeting place for them,” Højgaard said. The new urban design is intended to create a livelier district where residents can meet informally, rather than simply driving to and from shops.

The project has been under consideration for more than 10 years. It began with the demolition of five iconic high rise buildings in Brøndby Strand in 2023, one of the largest demolitions in Danish history.

Residents have welcomed the prospect of modernisation but also raised concerns. Sreyane Manssyn hopes the redevelopment will give young people better opportunities to meet, perhaps in a cultural centre where they can spend time together.

Jeanette Poulsen said the shopping centre had existed for as long as she could remember and that it was time for something new.

Ahmed Kassim described the construction as chaotic. Buildings have been demolished and residents rehoused twice in four years, he said, adding that rents rise when people return and many can no longer afford to live there.

Brøndby Strand was previously included on the government’s prevention list for public housing areas considered at risk of developing into so called ghettos. It was removed from the list in December 2025.

The first changes to Brøndby Strand Centrum are under public consultation until October 19. The municipal council will then vote on the local plan. The municipality will also hold a public meeting about the development plans on October 5.
