Students mourn classmate after fatal Krýsuvíkurvegur crash

Students and staff at Menntaskólinn við Sund are grieving after one of three youths killed in a crash on Krýsuvíkurvegur was a student at the school, mbl.is reported.

“There is great sorrow. That is perhaps what is most prevalent here, along with shock,” principal Helga Sigríður Þórsdóttir told mbl.is.

Many students were absent on Monday and Tuesday. Those who attended on Tuesday all wore pink after the idea was shared on Instagram late on Monday.

“It was their symbol of solidarity. Everyone here was simply wearing pink. They find their own ways,” Helga Sigríður said.

School staff, including counsellors, a nurse and teachers, have been available to talk with students.

Langholtskirkja opened its doors to the school’s students and staff on Monday evening. About 180 people attended to light candles and mourn together. Staff from the Icelandic Red Cross crisis team were also present to provide psychological support.

Helga Sigríður said the gathering included not only students from Menntaskólinn við Sund but young people from several schools, including many from Mosfellsbær.

“It was obvious that they needed a place to come together,” she said.
