Construction begins on Borgarlína route near Reykjavík University

Construction has begun on infrastructure for Borgarlína, a planned public transport project, along Nauthólsvegur near Reykjavík University, mbl.is reports. The work is part of the project’s first phase and is expected to be completed in July 2028.

The project includes redesigning Nauthólsvegur, Menntavegur and Menntasveigur, as well as their intersections and connections. Traffic will remain open throughout the construction period using detours.

Nauthólsvegur will be widened, with dedicated public transport lanes built in the centre of the road and separated from lanes for general traffic.

The work also includes a Borgarlína station at Reykjavík University, a new entrance to the university, a new entrance to the Icelandic Coast Guard and signal-controlled intersections to replace a roundabout.

Construction near Nauthólsvegur and Reykjavík University follows directly from the 270-metre Fossvogur Bridge, which is currently being built. The bridge is expected to open in summer 2028 and will connect the southern part of the capital region with the city centre in a new way. The bridge is also part of the first phase of Borgarlína.

Grafa og Grjót and Malbikunarstöðin Höfði are carrying out the Nauthólsvegur project. Their bid of 2.27 billion Icelandic krónur, including value-added tax, was the lowest submitted.
