Police seek regulation for electric bicycles

Traffic police want the Faroe Islands to adopt regulations for electric bicycles, Kringvarp Føroya (KVF) reported. Police say the rules are currently unclear, even as more electric bicycles are appearing in traffic.

Traffic officer Karl Leonsson said police cannot punish riders because no Faroese regulation has been issued. He urged parents to be cautious when buying electric bicycles that resemble mopeds.

“It is only a question of time before we seize the electric bicycles,” Leonsson said during an appearance on KVF’s morning programme.

Police can currently refer only to Danish regulations. In Denmark, the law allows people to cycle faster than 25 kilometres per hour, according to the report.

The rules for electric scooters are clearer. They are prohibited on public roads and other public areas, and police are required to seize them the first time they see them being used.

Leonsson said an increasing number of very young people are riding electric scooters. If a child is stopped on one, the person responsible for the child will be fined.
