Tórshavn maps nature to guide future land-use decisions

Tórshavn Municipality has begun registering its natural environment to improve decisions on land use, construction and the protection of nature areas, Kringvarp Føroya reports.

The municipality does not have a land-use plan and says knowledge of soil types, ecosystems and natural values is too limited.

The registration will identify areas that are particularly vulnerable or threatened, as well as locations requiring special consideration when construction, agriculture and other land use are planned.

Tórshavn Municipality is leading the project in cooperation with the National Museum and NIBIO, the Norwegian Institute of Bioeconomy.

The project is divided into three parts. The first has begun and is estimated to cost 400,000 kroner. The registration is expected to take three years.

The results will form part of the basis for a future land-use plan covering the whole of Tórshavn Municipality.
