The United States says Iceland remains an important ally within NATO and a close partner of the US and Europe following Iceland’s referendum on whether to resume membership talks with the European Union, mbl.is reports.
The statement was issued by Thomas “Tommy” Pigott, spokesperson for the US Department of State. It said the United States respects the referendum result and the sovereign decision of the Icelandic people.
US authorities also expressed confidence that Iceland would continue to be a strong and important NATO ally and a close partner of the United States and Europe.
The United States said it looked forward to further strengthening cooperation with Iceland in areas including security, energy, innovation, and economic and cultural relations. The two countries would also continue working together towards a shared vision of peace and prosperity.
