Iceland’s president urges respect after EU referendum result

Icelandic President Halla Tómasdóttir has called the result of the referendum on restarting European Union accession talks clear, while urging people to respect one another, mbl.is reports.

“Our views differ, but we have much more in common than what separates us,” Halla wrote in a social media post.

She said democracy was not only about voting, but also about how people move forward together after the vote.

Icelandic voters rejected restarting accession talks with the European Union. The final result, announced on Sunday morning, was 52.8 per cent against and 47.2 per cent in favour.
