EU respects Icelandic voters’ decision to reject renewed accession talks

European Council President Antonio Costa told Icelandic Prime Minister Kristrún Frostadóttir on Sunday that the European Union “fully respects the democratic choice” made by Iceland’s voters not to resume membership negotiations, AFP reported.

“Iceland remains one of the EU’s closest and most trusted partners,” a spokesperson for the European Council president said.

The spokesperson added that both leaders expressed their willingness to continue strengthening relations between the EU and Iceland.
