Iceland rejects EU accession talks in referendum

Icelanders have rejected starting accession negotiations with the European Union, with the no side winning 52.8 per cent of the nationwide vote, mbl.is reports.

The Danish outlet Berglinske described the result under the headline “Iceland slams the door on EU membership. This is a no that stings in Brussels.” Its analysis said Iceland had once again chosen to stand on its own.

“Icelanders are saying no to opening negotiations on EU membership. This is about emotions, a deep-rooted desire for independence and fear of losing something,” the article said.

The Swedish public broadcaster also described the result as a setback for Brussels and said it raised questions about the European Union’s appeal.
